Hi! I am Michelle Scarpello.
A few years ago I watched a documentary about birth. It blew my mind. I never before realized how truly amazing it really is. Once I started learning about pregnancy and birth, I just couldn't stop. I had heard the word doula before, but never knew the exact definition. And now a doula is what I am.
A doula to me is someone who supports a woman through her pregnancy, labor and birth. Someone who is kind, educated, who will listen and be there for her. I hesitated for a while before signing up for a doula training workshop. Could I really be a support person for a laboring mom? I love babies, but I have never had one. Finally I put that aside and decided that having a baby wasn't a requirement for being a doula. Being a compassionate person was and I had that going for me!
I took a toLabor doula training workshop and it was inspiring. For three days we learned all about pregnancy, birth and how to be an amazing support person. I was surrounded by other women who were just as passionate as me about birth and passionate about making waves in modernized maternity care. I became a doula because birth is the most beautiful thing to witness regardless of how it happens. I love helping educate women and their partners to be advocates in the birth room. I love going over birth plans and talking about options. At the end of the day this is YOUR birth and you should be the one making the decisions based on what you believe and what you desire for your birth. I love birth and being able to be a part of this process is such a blessing in my life!
